Introduction
You have a mind that is vastly more powerful than you realize.
Weaker minds than yours have ruled great empires, invented world-changing
technologies, and fashioned great and motivating philosophies
and stories. But parts of your mind can be petty and limited.
They might seek drama, insist on their own biased agendas, or
even attempt to rule over your life. In mistaking these various
parts of your mind for yourself, you descend into the role of
their servant and grant them power.
All of us are at times obedient to programs or reactive processes
in our thinking, much as a slave is ordered around by his master,
or as a subject in a trance follows the commands of a hypnotist.
We typically recognize this only in extreme cases, like that
of a schizophrenic who helplessly follows the voices in his head.
But this upside down relationship between our minds and our whole
being is more common than we realize. The examples in this book,
along with honest self-reflection, will make this clear.
