The Thought Identification Problem
What is thought identification? It is when you think or feel
or act as if your thoughts are who you are - that they are important
to your core identity. To think more clearly, you need to avoid
or get past identifying with your own thoughts as though they
are you- as thought they deserve to be protected as a part of
yourself.
What happens when you protect your thoughts and your beliefs
in the same way that you protect your body? You "protect"
them from your own ability to learn better ideas. In other words,
you short-circuit the proper operations of an open and inquiring
mind. You hold your present state of knowledge above any truth
or new information that might improve it.
Don't get hung up on what your own mind tells you. For example,
it will tell you that it is important to win an argument or to
develop an idea just because it is "yours." The result
can be defending your words as though they are your "self"
and missing out on some great opportunities to learn more and
have new ideas. Like a baby's fascination with his own excrement,
adults tend to cling to tightly to an idea and theory just because
it came out of them. We need to outgrow that if we want a flexible,
powerful and mature mind.
One solution is to consciously challenge your own ideas. I
cover this and other problems in detail in Beyond Mental Slavery.
